“Our officers must be freed before relations with Turkey are normalized” Katrougalos says

“A cornerstone for normalising Turkey’s relations with Europe, with the West, is Turkey’s relationship with Greece and a condition for normalising our relations is the release of the two Greek soldiers,” Alternate Foreign Minister Giorgos Katrougalos, said on Tuesday in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) in Vienna.

Katrougalos participated in the Summer University of the European Left party in the Austrian capital that European Left President Gregor Gysi opened in the framework of similar informational, educational events organised by the European Parliament in the summer and which are addressed not only at their executives but also to those interested in the general political affairs of Europe.

Regarding the issue of the Greek soldiers, Katrougalos said that one of the reasons for his optimism is that the worsening of Turkey’s relations, not only with Greece, but more generally with Europe, has led to significant problems in the Turkish economy – a large increase in inflation, a big drop in the Turkish lira, investors leaving the country. “This normalisation of relations is clearly in the interests of Turkey and President Erdogan is a visionary leader who cannot ignore it,” he added.
