President Prokopis Pavlopoulos unveils memorial in memory of Coast Guard officers fallen in duty

President of the Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos on Friday unveiled a Coast Guard Memorial in honour of fallen coast guard officers, noting that it served as an opportunity, in his capacity as president, to honour and offer the coast guard the respect it was due.

Pavlopoulos referred to the refugee issue and the issue of illegal migration, noting that the Coast Guard had served as “an example of operational excellence but also of humanitarian action and sensitivity. In other words, a model of democratic mentality, which defends fundamental human rights.”

“The Coast Guard, having earned, as I have emphasised, European and international recognition, serves as a reminder, through its exemplary action, for the competent bodies of the European Union and the international community, of what they should do without delay against those countries that directly violate fundamental principles and values of European and international law but also of our own culture,” concluded Pavlopoulos.
