PM chairs SYRIZA Political Council: Government and party will collaborate to promote progressive policies

SYRIZA’s strategy after August 20 when Greece exits the programme was the main focus of a SYRIZA Political Council meeting held on Tuesday, chaired by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

Party sources said the three-hour meeting had noted the good news regarding the Greek economy and the “fiscal space” for social support action created after the Eurogroup’s decisions, using some 750 million euros in surpluses that exceed medium-term targets.

The kind of actions to be adopted will be decided in cooperation with the economic team, which will hold regular meetings to discuss which actions the prime minister can announce at the Thessaloniki International Fair in September, such as lower taxes and others, they said.

From August 21, when Greece formally exits the financial adjustment programme, and until the elections in the autumn of 2019, the government and party will collaborate to promote progressive policies that will build the country’s post-programme future, the sources added. This programme will be finalised by the party’s Central Committee, which will meet at the end of August, while its political secretariat may meet in the coming week.
