Parents should limit TV scenes of fire destruction to children, non profit organisation warns

Non profit organisation Merimna has warned parents against exposing their children excessively to the scenes of death and destruction arising from the fires in eastern Attica.

In a guide published by the group, it says that children’s exposure to television images of the fire should be limited while parents need to highlight initiatives that create security, such as describing government steps to take care of fire victims and support measures from public and private bodies and individuals.
When children are continually exposed to images and descriptions that relate to catastrophic events, such as fires, they become particularly vulnerable to stress, fears and symptoms of post-traumatic stress as they don’t have the knowledge and emotional maturity to work with this information, it said.
