Energy minister submits Voluntary National Assessment to UN development goals forum

Alternate Environment and Energy Minister Socratis Famellos presented on Monday Greece’s Voluntary National Assessment, which analyses the work of the Greek government to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the basis of the ‘Agenda 2030’ at the UN High Level Policy Forum on Sustainable Development.

The forum, held between July 9 to July 18, is taking place at the UN headquarters.

The Greek Voluntary National Assessment was the first to be held for the country and was accompanied by the submission of a detailed national report prepared under the coordination of the general secretariat of the government with the contribution of all ministries, with the Energy Ministry leading as it is responsible for seven out of a total of 17 SDGs.

In his speech, Famellos referred to the government plans and referred to the progress made at national level in implementing the SDGs:

Firstly, the institutional interministerial mechanism that has been set up to ensure a high political commitment and social dialogue for the successful implementation of the Objectives.

Secondly, the government’s strategy for exiting the crisis and achieving equitable development, combined with the achievement of SDGs in the social and economic pillar.

Thirdly, the key instruments of implementation and examples of integrated policy interconnections such as the cyclical economy and social policy strategy.

And finally, the next steps that have been taken, such as the development of a National Implementation Plan for SDGs, linked to Greece’s new development strategy and greater involvement of the parliament in monitoring the implementation of the objectives.

Famellos underlined Greece’s determination to implement Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development and the 17 SDGs as they provide a progressive framework for transformation towards a new, just and sustainable development path that ensures a balance between economic growth, social cohesion and justice, as well as protecting the environment and the unique ecological wealth of the country.
