Aegean University signs cooperation deal with Chinese geology and paleontology institute




An important international cooperation agreement was signed on Monday, July 16, between the University of the Aegean and the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The agreement covers research, education and geo-surveying.

Professor Qun Yang, Director of the Institute and President of the Palaeontology Society of China, and Professor Yongdong Wang, Deputy Director of the Institute and Secretary General of the Palaeontology Society of China visited Lesvos to sign the agreement.

The main scientific areas and sectors of cooperation between the two universities under the agreement will be geosciences and environmental sciences.

According to a statement of Aegean University Professor Nikos Zouros to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, “the aim of the agreement is to strengthen cooperation in the following areas:

– promoting research and education in scientific areas of common interest,

– cooperation in joint research programmes and activities with internal or external funding,

– promote exchanges of educational staff and researchers between the two bodies,

– strengthening cooperation in the fields of economic, cultural and social activities in which the two institutions are involved.

In particular, it is envisaged that cooperation will start by promoting the following three initiatives:

– the promotion of a joint program for the conservation and preservation of fossils in China,

– joint research activities in the field of geo-conservation and promotion of natural monuments,

– an exchange of educational visits and the organisation of joint educational activities.
