Golden Dawn barred from Parliament after MP calls for arrest of the government by the army

Parliament President Nikos Voutsis urged on Friday the appropriate parliamentary bodies to intervene after far-right Golden Dawn MP Kostas Barbaroussis openly called on the military to arrest the Greek president and prime minister. The MP was speaking during the debate on a censure motion that is currently underway in parliament.

Acting on Voutsis’ proposal, parliament unanimously agreed to deprive all Golden Dawn MPs of the right to speak and participate in the debate on the censure motion, activating Article 79 of the parliamentary regulations.

Under Article 79, if an MP is called to order and continues his or her unacceptable or inappropriate behaviour, the president can deprive the MP of the right to speak until the end of the debate on the specific issue where the problem arose and, in serious cases and with a parliamentary decision, until the end of the session.

“Today in the Greek parliament, the masks have fallen. The political force Golden Dawn openly called for a coup against the polity, made a call for a military coup and did so with a nod from the majority of Golden Dawn’s parliamentary group,” Voutsis said, addressing the plenum.
“Clearly, we find ourselves before an escalation that is absolutely deliberate and planned, divisive, and which seeks to provoke violent incidents and divisions today, tomorrow and on Sunday,” he added.

This cannot be accepted, Voutsis said, and announced that he was immediately calling the appropriate parliamentary organs “for the non presence of these gentlemen and ladies in this parliament, at least until the end of this process, after which we will see.”

The parliament president’s intervention was prompted by Barbaroussis’ address to parliament that asked for the country’s political leadership to be arrested by the military for treason:
“Since the political leadership of the country is not legislating in the interests of the nation but their own personal interests, I call on the military leadership of the country to honour their vows. To arrest Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, to arrest [Defence Minister] Panos Kammenos and [President of the Republic] Prokopis Pavlopoulos to prevent this treason! Your heads in Prespes!” Barbaroussis said, causing an uproar.
