Prokopis Pavlopoulos sends clear message to Turkey: “We will defend freedom at all costs”

“Over time, we Greeks will defend freedom against everything and at all costs,” was the message sent by President Prokopis Pavlopoulos from Lasithi Plateau during an event marking 150 years from a battle held in the area in eastern Crete.

The president highlighted that “the epic battle of Lasithi is an anthem to Cretans and all Greeks at the altar of freedom. The heroic fighters of Lasithi teach that we Greeks, worthy descendants of great ancestors over time, will defend freedom against everything and at all costs. All of this, all of these big battles fought by Cretans and Greeks, are summed up by the phrase from Nikos Kazantzakis: It is my duty, and mine alone, to save the earth. If it is not saved, then I alone am to blame.”

The president went on to add that Greece is a force of peace and democracy in the region and that it aims to have good ties with its neighbours, particularly Turkey. This, however, demands that Turkey respects European and international laws.

“Therefore, the provisions of the Treaty of Lausanne, just like the Treaty of Paris of 1947, cannot be revised or updated and are absolutely clear and complete without leaving any room whatsoever for grey zones, must be respected by Turkey,” said the president.
