Eurogroup will today discuss the International Monetary Fund’s role in the Greek programme

Negotiations over the International Monetary Fund’s role in the Greek programme and the post-programme period will peak on Thursday ahead of the Eurogroup meeting at 16:00 (Athens time).

According to Athens-Macedonian News Agency sources, the finance ministers of the big Eurozone countries (Germany, France, Italy and Spain) will meet in Brussels with the heads of the European Central Bank and the European Stability Mechanism, as well as the head of the IMF’s European division, Poul Thomsen, to discuss whether or not the IMF will be involved in funding the Greek programme. According to the same sources, intensive consultations have been held between the IMF and Germany over the last 24 hours.

The current Eurogroup will discuss all aspects of Greece’s successful exit from the programme, including debt relief, but no decisions are expected as they will be taken to the Eurogroup on 21 June. A senior Eurozone official said he was confident that all decisions on Greece’s exit from the memorandum, including debt relief measures, would be taken by the Eurogroup on June 21, whether or not the IMF will eventually participate in the Greek programme with funding.
