New signs coming soon for renamed Skopje airport and FYROM motorway

Signs bearing the new names of the international airport in Skopje and a motorway in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) will be put up within the next few days, as soon as the FYROM government’s decision to rename them is published in the government gazette.

The decision to change the name of the airport and motorway from “Alexander the Great” and “Alexander of Macedon” to “Skopje International Airport” and “Friendship”, respectively, was taken by the FYROM cabinet on Tuesday.

The removal of the existing road signs will be carried out by the FYROM state road-building fund, while the renaming of Skopje airport will be handled by the Turkish company TAV, which has been managing the airport since 2010. In a recent announcement, TAV said it will respect the FYROM government’s decision and noted that it was a “political issue”.
