Body pulled out of basement raises flash flood death toll to 16

The body of another man was recovered by the Fire Brigade on Thursday from the basement of his house in the area of Gefyraki in Nea Peramos, which was one of the towns hit most severely by flash floods yesterday.

The death of the man, around 50 years old, raises the death toll from the floods to 16. Rescue teams are still looking for another four missing people.

Government will proceed quickly with reconstruction in western Attica

The government will proceed quickly with reconstruction work and provide support to households and businesses affected by the floods in western Attica, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday after a long meeting in the offices of the regional operation center in Elefsina.

“We are all shocked with what we saw. Obviously this is a rare and extreme weather phenomenon. However, this extreme phenomenon worked the way it did because of the accumulated inertia, the accumulated problems and the lack in infrastructure projects, but also in the town planning,” he said.

“It is our commitment to proceed with the immediate reconstruction work, healing of wounds and restoration of property, whether it concerns households or businesses.”

Tsipras said the meeting focused primarily on the operational arm of the reconstruction, noting that the problems which led to the disaster in western Attica are prevalent in other regions of the country.

“Let these people be the last ones we lose. Let this be the incentive for all of us to restore the necessary infrastructure of town planning, so that we never live this again,” he added, and hailed the efforts of rescue crews.
