The Athens Public Transport Organization (OASA) will give a free ticket with the purchase of 10 electronic tickets, the president of OASA’s board of directors Tassos Tastanis said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Wednesday.
The measure has been voted in Parliament and will also apply for reduced price tickets.
The president of the organisation noted that OASA is also examining reduced-price tickets for early morning commutes (6-9 am), and short commutes of up to five stops, as well as for monthly card holders.
“The aim is to have all all paper tickets replaced with an electronic ticket by the end of the year or early next year. The new electronic ticket will put an end to fake tickets that hurt the organisation’s revenues,” he underlined.
For the renewal of the bus fleet, Tastanis said that OASA has secured 30 million euros from the Region and will launch an international tender for the procurement of 92 new anti-pollution technology buses by the end of the year. He is also looking for other sources of funding to buy another 500 buses by 2022, he said.
For the smooth operation of public urban transport in Athens, at least 700 technicians and drivers need to be hired, according to OASA’s estimates.
Moreover, the deficit of the organisation will be reduced by 19.34 million euros compared with the estimated deficit, he stated.
