Morning session of Conference on Cyprus underway in Crans-Montana




The morning session of the Conference on Cyprus on the chapter of security and guarantees, presided over by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in Crans-Montana, Switzerland is underway.

Guterres arrived in Crans-Montana earlier in the morning by helicopter to take charge of the negotiations in both parallel talks that are taking place.

The UN Secretary General, who does not appear to have a written address before him according to sources, said speaking to the participants that we come from the Mediterranean and we understand each other better.

Ahead of the morning session UN SG`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide had separate meetings with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

Guterres will take part in a luncheon with the two leaders, who will be accompanied by one other person each.

At 1500 hours local time (1300 GMT) Guterres will make statements to the press.

The Conference on Cyprus began on Wednesday, to help find a negotiated settlement to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
