Tsipras meets Raúl Castro, other Latin American leaders during visit to Cuba

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met and held talks with Cuba’s President Raúl Castro during his visit to Cuba to attend Fidel Castro’s funeral, which took place on Tuesday.

They discussed relations between Cuba and the European Union, including the upcoming EU-Cuba agreement. This included a discussion on Greece’s role as a country in the EU.

In addition to Castro, Tsipras also had meetings with another four leading figures of Central and South America, including Nicaragua’s recently re-elected President Daniel Ortega, Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa, Bolivian President Evo Morales and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

According to a government source, these meetings added an additional dimension to the premier’s visit to Cuba for Castro’s funeral.

He came away with invitations to visit Nicaragua, Bolivia and Mexico and also had a chance to have in-depth talks on EU-Latin American issues, the source pointed out.

The Greek prime minister also had a chance to speak at length with Mexico’s president, the source added, since they were sitting side by side during the funeral ceremony, and discussed the new landscape emerging in America and the world after the election of Donald Trump.
