EU leaders to say they regret Britain’s decision but will not take any decisions, says Bruegel analyst

The 27 EU leaders who will meet on June 28-29 in Brussels to discuss the results of the British referendum will express their regret over the outcome but will not take any decisions, Bruegel Senior Fellow Zsolt Darvas told ANA-MPA on Monday.

Darvas said EU leaders cannot pressure British Prime Minister David Cameron to activate article 50 of the European Treaty to leave the union before the British parliament decides to do so.

“The heads of state and government will be satisfied with a statement in which they will express their regret. They cannot do more,” he said, adding that although there has been pressure on Cameron in this direction, German Chancellor Angela Merkel recognized that time must be given to Britain.
