key must respect commitments towards EU, says FM Kotzias

BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA/ M. Aroni) –Turkey needs to meet the commitments it has undertaken towards the EU by respecting European law and European procedures, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said on Monday, during the EU-Turkey Intergovernmental Conference in Brussels which opened negotiations on Chapter 17 in the country’s accession talks.

Chapter 17 is one of the 35 Turkey must complete to join the bloc.

In his speech, Kotzias said that during the working lunch of the EU’s 28 foreign ministers with the Turkish delegation, the two sides discussed European, Turkish views on Iraq, Syria and developments in the Middle East.

The minister also said that the EU inaugurated negotiations on Serbia’s accession talks. “It’s a procedure for which we fought for a long time and this is why I will attend as a minister, though it’s not customary.”
