Pavlopoulos’ message ahead of 1973 Polytechnic uprising

The defence of democracy and freedom must be continuous and undiminished, Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said on Monday in his message for tomorrow’s anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic uprising.

November 17 marks a bloody 1973 student revolt against the then-ruling military junta which ended when the regime sent in the tanks to crush the uprising.

“The anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising, which is always timely but emits new nationally important symbolism under the current conditions, teaches us that the struggle to defend democracy and freedom must be continuous and undiminished,” Pavlopoulos said.
