Athens on high security ahead of 1973 Polytechnic uprising anniversary

About 6,000 policemen will be deployed around the Greek capital as part of the police force’s stringent security measures that have been announced ahead of the anniversary of the 1973 Polytechnic uprising on Tuesday.

The city has beefed up security around embassies, public buildings and organizations that are potential targets, following the terrorist attacks in Paris.

November 17 marks a bloody 1973 student revolt against the then-ruling military junta which ended when the regime sent in the tanks to crush the uprising. The anniversary will conclude with the annual march towards the American embassy.
