Water pipeline from Turkey continues expansionist policy against Cyprus

The underwater pipeline transferring water from Turkey to the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus as well as the triumphant tone given by Turkish leadership unfortunately prove that the project`s aim was not to cover the Turkish Cypriot community water needs but to convey the message of Turkey`s expansionist policy against Cyprus` sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, Acting President and President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has said.

This is an act of incorporation of the illegally occupied part of Cyprus, he said.

He added that instead of urging the Greek Cypriot side to utilise the opportunity for a Cyprus settlement, the international community and the European community should convince Turkey to comply with the international and European law.

Omirou furthermore said that Mustafa Akinci, after his election at the head of the Turkish Cypriot community, was portrayed as a pro-solution politician but his latest remarks for a majority of land ownership and population and permanent derogations from the EU acquis and keeping Turkish settlers and guarantees create a sentiment of resentment and change the climate.

On UN Secretary-General position for a multilateral conference on the Cyprus problem in 2016, Omιrou made clear that such a conference is possible only the agreement on the international aspects of the Cyprus problem and noted that this conference should be given an international character with the presence of the EU and UN.

“Only in this context there can be a correct discussions leading to the abolishment of the anachronistic 1960 system of guarantee,” he concluded.
