Hollande offers support to Anastasiades for a Cyprus solution

The French President Francois Hollande has spoken in favour of the ongoing negotiation efforts pursued by President Nicos Anastasiades for a solution to the Cyprus problem, and urged European partners to stand by the Republic of Cyprus.

Hollande was speaking in Athens on the first of his two-day visit in Greece. His reference to Cyprus was in response to his Greek counterpart`s, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, reference that “all EU partners can no longer tolerate the continued occupation of Cyprus” which, as he said, should end with a just solution, with respect to human rights, international law, and European values and regulations.

“It is obvious that we are dealing with a European problem”, said Francois Hollande, “and of course the Cyprus problem needs to be solved”.

He added that Europe “should stand by Cyprus”, and he offered his support to President Anastasiades so that “with negotiations and dialogue we can reach a solution”.

The President of France, is accompanied by a large group of government and party officials, but mainly by businessmen who will explore the possibilities of doing business in Greece.

“It is not enough to say that we love Greece, we have to invest in it”, he said, speaking to his compatriot entrepreneurs.

Tomorrow Hollande will hold talks with the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, and he will also address a full session of the Greek Parliament.

As he said, Greece should fulfil all obligations arising from its bailout agreement, but Europe should also be prepared to offer its help and support. Hollande also noted that it`s time to start the discussion on Greek debt.
