Britain behind all the ills and suffering in Cyprus

By MICHAIL IGNATIOU

The British PM, David Cameron, was last Thursday in Acrotiri, Cyprus. .. This is the British Sovereign Military Base that the British got by fiat and blackmail, during the end of the anti-colonial struggle of EOKA (1, 2). Instead of departing defeated and humiliated, as they should have, they obtained dictatorial privileges and remained, since then, the regulators of the island, her politics and economy, all the while continuing their policy of divide and rule, both in the internal politics of Cyprus, as well as in what subsequently emerged as the Cyprus issue.

Even before Cyprus obtained her independence form the British, the latter set up their own political machine, which unfortunately included several Greek and Turkish Cypriots as prominent members. Membership in this machine is hereditary, as members include parents (grandparents), children and grandchildren. Who doubts that in our island there exists one of the most effective spy-agent networks, which occasionally resorts to blackmail, as it happened during the period of the campaign for the acceptance of the incredibly pro-Turkish (but not pro-Turkish Cypriot) Anan plan; then we witnessed many people changing sides overnight! To be sure, the US has her own machines and networks, but they are “lambs” compared to the sinful and dirty British (3). The big mistake of the US officials is that they systematically consider the British “infallible” when it comes to Cyprus, becoming thus their followers, and end up getting all the blame and “anathema”, for trying to carry out evil British designs. Something that is unfair.

The British are responsible for the new round of international terrorism, which has been proven to be the most violent in modern world history. The organization of all the horrible things that are taking place, and we daily watch, are the work of British-born jihadists, who were imbibed with poison against anything non-Moslem in British mosques. There is serious testimony, and evidence has also been presented, according to which an Islamic leader in London was teaching the faithful the best method for beheading someone! Has this fellow been arrested by the British, or is he still teaching how to kill the “infidels”? No one knows.

You can imagine what would have happened, had the above been taking place in Greece or Cyprus. The British would hound us until …the Second Coming. They would again heap destruction upon Cyprus, something they know very well.

Cyprus has seen no good coming from London. The British were, and are to this day, our enemies. Naturally, you know your enemy and take precautions. Nevertheless, this enemy is very conniving, and always appears in lamb’s clothing and pretends to have the lamb’s innocence when this animal first sees the light, after birth. They are not to be believed however, as they have not even a trace of sympathy for us. They only care about absolute control of the island and her natural resources, considering that we are second class inhabitants, unworthy to take care of ourselves and our resources, a belief in line with the worst of colonial exploits.

The arrival of PM Cameron in Akrotiri and not in one of the two official airports of Cyprus is a provocative act and demonstrates the unacceptable mentality and behavior of the British, who took special care in sending the message that they are still the boss. The way was paved by the similar action of the British Minister of Defense last summer, who, of course, rushed to the Troodos mountains to meet the President of the Repoublic of Cyprus, a move that was presented as respectful and appreciative towards Mr. Anastasiades. It is good that the President knows what do behind his back, and they say about him—that he does not wear pants anymore but a skirt, something that is not true…..

The trials and tribulations of Cyprus are due to the British. Turkey has been their executive arm for a long time, but now it is Turkey that plays the drum and….the British are dancing, drunk in the beer halls…

The presence of the British PM in Cyprus is not for the good of Cyprus. He came to play the game of the heroic leader who visits his troops; yet, if the jihadists decide to take revenge for his actions, it is the Greek Cypriots who will suffer, as the British are well guarded in their sovereign bases. This DOES NOT mean that the Republic of Cyprus should not participate in the war against terror. The cooperation with the US in this war is a good thing, as is the cooperation with the French air forces involved. Simply, our leaders should see to it that in return they obtain benefits for Cyprus herself, and her national issue….

  3. The economic exploitation of Cyprus by the British started early on, from the 2nd year of British rule, in 1879. Sultan Abdul Hamid decided to cease payments on the Anglo-French bonds issued to help the Ottman Empire during the Crimean War (1854) and the Disraeli government considered it proper to have the Cypriots, as Ottoman subjects, pay for the Sultan’s default. The amount of ca. 90,000 pounds was leveled per year (to a population of less than 200,000!). This continued up until 1928, well after the British nullified the 1878 treaty with the Ottomans on obtaining Cyprus, because the latter joined the Central Powers against Britain in WW I, in September 1914. No less a person than Winston Churchill, then Undersecretary for the Colonies, was to remark in 1907 on briefly visiting Cyprus that there is no more hateful sight than the exploitation of a small community by a great power, for monetary gain.
