My name is John Kiriakou. I’m a former CIA officer, anti-torture whistleblower, and patriot. I am also proud of my Greek heritage and roots to the founding principles of democracy. I’m currently incarcerated in the federal prison in Loretto, Pennsylvania.

I want to thank Jim Spione, Daniel Chalfan, and Susan Sarandon for the honor of allowing me to appear in this important film. I’ve learned the hard way how critical the act of whistleblowing is to the health of our democracy, to maintaining the strength of our country, and to ensuring the inviolability of our Constitution.

Whistleblowing is not an issue with which the mainstream media is comfortable. Often, members of the press want to protect their access to officials in the White House, the intelligence community, the defense establishment, and elsewhere. Jim Spione and his colleagues went against the grain by illustrating what former President John F. Kennedy believed, “Without debate, without criticism, no administration and no country can succeed and no republic can survive.”

The release of “Silenced” is empowering and comforting to me as I sit in Loretto. Jim’s story does what I could do NOT alone, with the full power and resources of the U.S. Justice Dept hell bent on making an example of me. It amplifies the truth in a meaningful way for the broader public— and I am pleased that some of the dark details about individual abuse of power are finally beginning to play out in the mainstream media and on Capitol Hill. The law was broken by many who devised the torture policies, by those who carried out the policies, and those who covered up their existence. In the zeal to protect those who committed these crimes, the Agency came after me for exposing them and convinced the Department of Justice that disloyalty to a bureaucracy should be equivalent to disloyalty to our country.

On a personal note, which is probably obvious after watching the film, the worst part of this ordeal has been my separation from Heather and our children and the toll that it has taken on them. Every night that I am not there for story time, or birthdays, or holidays–or when Heather tells me that my absence is causing so much stress for my 9 year-old son, Max, that he has chronic nausea—it is a painful reminder of the price I am paying for blowing the whistle on torture. In the long-term, however, I am certain that history will be on my side and that my children will understand and be proud of me.

“Silenced” is not just a documentary. It’s an act of patriotism and a work with which I’m proud to be associated. Thank you.
