Dealing with the pandemic is a government priority PM Mitsotakis says

“The government is giving priority to dealing with the pandemic. We are still battling to persuade our fellow citizens to get vaccinated. I have three meetings a week with the health policy team,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in Parliament on Monday, in response to a question about the handling of the pandemic from the main opposition.

There is no truth to SYRIZA’s lies and the misinformation that runs through the entirety of your politics. The real data concern the overall response to the pandemic from the first moment it struck in our country,” he added, replying to SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras.

Greece is in a much better position than the European average in deaths per million population. “And it is not just very unfair, it is wrong to isolate what is happening in the country for a few weeks and not look at the bigger picture. We do not have any excess mortality due to covid. Greece is perfectly in line with the European average,” Mitsotakis added.

“According to data from Greece’s hospitals, those who fall seriously ill, are unfortunately intubated, and many of which die, are almost all of them unvaccinated,” the prime minister said in his speech.

“The reality about which there can be no doubt is that the only answer we have to the coronavirus pandemic is the vaccine. Those who are not vaccinated are 13 to 20 times more likely to get seriously ill than those who are vaccinated,” Mitsotakis noted, and added:

“Vaccines have proven to be extremely safe. More than 6.6 billion doses have been made worldwide. On the contrary, the harmful effects of Covid accompany the patient for many more years.”

As the prime minister noted, “vaccination provides relief to the health system. You made a comparison between first, second and third wave. With the vaccination rates that the country has, in relation to the 2nd or 3rd wave, we have significantly fewer hospitalisations with a corresponding number of cases.”

  • According to European statistics, more than 6.5 million of our fellow citizens in our country have received at least one dose of the vaccine. It is a percentage which even today, if one compares with the intentions of the citizens in December 2020, is higher,” Mitsotakis noted.

“Of course we would like to have better results,” he said and added. “What does this data really mean? Is it a deliberate political failure? Social fatigue? Cultural or possibly religious peculiarities? It’s all of that but also the undermining of a front of common sense that should have been unbroken from the beginning.”

“I am open to discussing all of the above,” he added.
