French embassy: Consulate’s message to French nationals part of standard communication

A message issued by the French consulate in Athens on Friday afternoon, advising French nationals in Greece on emergencies, was part of an effort to provide an official source of information in case of natural disasters, and did not refer to any current event, the French embassy said in an explanatory press release.

The embassy said this is a standard message in countries with high risk of earthquakes or other natural disasters.
“It was decided therefore to send a message, which does not constitute an emergency alert, and inform the French community they can register and be notified by our system,” the embassy said.

“The message in question is directed in the usual way at the members of the French community. It is administrative in nature […] and does not constitute an alert,” it added.
