Aim is to complete 3rd review before the end of the year, says Eurogroup chief

The implementation of the Greek programme and the third review dominated an informal eurogroup meeting in Talinn on Friday, stated Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem at a press conference after the end of the meeting.

Dijsselbloem said that the staff missions of the institutions were already in Athens to pave the way for a rapid start of the third review, underlining that the aim was to complete this before the end of the year.

According to the Eurogroup chief, Greece has recently covered a lot of ground and the Eurogroup welcomed the European Commission’s proposal for Greece’s exit from the excessive deficit procedure, which is expected to be ratified officially by the Council of General Affairs later in September.

However, the Dutch minister also conveyed the euro area ministers’ “concerns” about ongoing legal proceedings in the country and specifically the prosecution of former ELSTAT (Independent Statistics Authority) chief Andreas Georgiou. The independence of courts and statistics were fundamental in a modern democracy and must be safeguarded by all, he underlined.
