Tsipras noted risk of sending ‘wrong message’ to investors in talks with political party leaders

In his meeting with main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras noted the danger of allowing legitimate political confrontation on economic issues to “send the wrong message to investors,” government sources said.

Describing the atmosphere at the meeting as “calm and good,” they said Tsipras outlined the technical details of the June 15 Eurogroup agreement and said that the recovery of the economy and return to the markets was a national target. Political confrontation, he added “must not undermine the national goal.”

The prime minister also told Mitsotakis that he was seeking a broad cross-party consensus regarding the legal framework for the operation and management of a planned Development Bank, the sources said.

Tsipras also informed the main opposition leader about the latest developments concerning the Cyprus issue, repeating Greece’s known positions and noting the possibility of reaching an understanding between the political parties in order to arrive a settlement. Tsipras and Mitsotakis also discussed the future of Europe and the discussions underway on changing the architecture of Europe.

The sources said the prime minister’s initiative to invite the political party leaders for talks was essential, adding that it was right for the party leaders to be briefed by the prime minister.
