Boris Johnson calls for “further flexibility and creativity” ahead of Cyprus visit

The UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has called for more flexibility and creativity in the efforts to reach a settlement to the 42-year old Cyprus issue, just hours before he visits the island.

“This is a significant time in the settlement negotiations and I look forward to meeting with both leaders. I welcome the progress made in the negotiations in recent months. I applaud the dedication of both negotiating teams, and the continued determination, and courageous leadership from President (Nicos) Anastasiades and Mr (Mustafa) Akinci. With further flexibility and creativity by all sides involved, we believe a solution is within reach,” said Johnson.

He added that “the UK fully supports the current settlement process and stands ready to help in any way it can in order to bring lasting peace to Cyprus.”

The Foreign Secretary will have meetings on Wednesday with President Anastasiades, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci. He will also meet UN representatives and British UN peacekeepers working in the buffer zone.

In his statement he also affirmed that “the UK has a strong and important relationship with Cyprus,” a relationship that, as he said, he believes “will only go from strength to strength in years to come.”
